The Great Fur Conundrum

Rhiannon posted something thought-provoking and really got me thinking about pro/anti-fur arguments. I myself am anti-fur. Not even for animal rights reasons, either. I just think that wearing the obvious remains of a dead animal is creepy and far too ostentatious. I don’t even like the way fake fur looks! Now, with that being said I don’t mind leather, because it is visually less obvious to me that you are wearing a dead animal. Sometimes I feel like a hypocrite because I hate fur and like leather all while eating a primarily vegetarian diet (allowing for the rare sushi binge, that is). What are your opinions on wearing fur?

I kind of like the look of fur in certain contexts, and fake is really just as nice but less creepy than real, but it's really just not me. I don't even like animal print, so I stick to my synthetic fibers.

Some months ago, my mom gave me a vintage mink cape. I havn't worn it yet. Im quite a hypocrite too. I guess, that I think it's "ok" to wear vintage fur. Im a vegetarian too, I eat fish thoug. And If there is one thing I can't stand, it's people who eats loads of meat, have leather bags, boots u name it, but still tell you how wrong wearing fur is..

I have been a vegetarian for six years and have come to this conclusion about fur. Vintage/second hand fur is okay to wear because, when getting fur
second-hand, it is not supporting the fur industry. No money is made by those who had killed the animal.

Who here can afford new fur anyway?
"Oh God! I have $8,000 burning a hole in my pocket!"

Even though I am a vegetarian, I believe there's nothing wrong with wearing vintage/second-hand fur. You aren't supporting the fur industry in any way, and you can look good too! The only problem is if someone sees you and is like "Oh she looks so good, I'm going to go buy some fur!" But, as the iron chic said, new fur is (thankfully) prohibitively expensive for most people. However, I would probably still get some odd looks wearing a fur coat, with people being like, "whoa, you're wearing a dead animal." From the same people who wouldn't blink if you were wearing a leather jacket.

I kinda love the look of fur in certain contexts, but I can't actually let myself wear it. I'm vegetarian and I would feel a complete hypocrite! I couldn't cope with the public hate it would no doubt attract, too.

Personally I wouldn't wear fur either because of the whole dead animal in the shape of a coat thing. But I think there's a huge difference between fur and leather which is that in order to make a fur coat, you'd have to kill a bunch of animals that are at risk of extinction while leather comes from animals that served another function, like cows (that we eat). So they were kinda gonna die anyway, and that's why they were bred in the first place.
So yeah, paying thousands of dollars for a creepy-ass coat sounds to me like the kind of thing only a person who doesn't have anything better to think about would do... On the other hand, we're here discussing vegetarianism and animal rights while there are far, far worse things happening to PEOPLE. As we speak.

i won't wear real fur.
i like the look, but only faux, because i hate the idea of killing an innocent animal just for fashion.
and i love fashion, but there are other ways.
