Musings on Doc Martens

Doc Martens are pretty cool in my book, but they haven't always been that way. They used to be the footwear of threatening and rebellious youth! And weren't they orthopaedic shoes before then? I don't want to be the indie kid who hates his favourite band once everyone else caught on to them, but having them co-opeted by high-fashion has ruined them a little bit in my books. I know a few lovely bloggers have bought them and I wouldn't try to discourage anyone from wearing them, but just try to keep Ian MacKaye in mind instead of Alexander Wang. Though I would rather have you think about Alexander Wang than skinheads. That would just be wrong.

I'm sad I didn't get the high-heeled ones by Chloe!

I'd rather find an imitation type deal-y at Value Village or something.

I remember wanting them in 3rd grade, so my mom ended up buying me imitations for a lot less because, well...who's going to buy their child a pair of $100 boots? But just a few months ago I was considering getting them now that I can afford them myself. But I figure, since I'm not the high fashion type and more of the jeans-tshirt type, that it might be okay. Besides, a little Minor Threat and such has always been my choice.

Love your blog!

I've always quite respected the non-skinhead Doc Marten crowd, but not as much as I abhorred the suburbia-mall wannabe-Doc Marten crowd. This prevented me from ever going out and buying them at a store, but if the cosmic paths of Alix and a pair of Doc Martens ever happen to meet, they will be mine with unabashed glee.

I've always liked them but always worried that I'm too small to pull them off. Every time I wear the pair I've had since high school I feel like my feet look huge compared with my body. I had a pair in elementary school that were black velvet (I remember them being amazing, but something tells me I probably wouldn't go for them now). :)

"indie kid who hates his favourite band once everyone else caught on to them"

that's me.
except the female version, of course.
i looved feist (when every other 'indie' kid did) and then bam, she goes on the itunes commerical and everyone is singing 1234, when they've never even heard mushaboom !! and they call her 'feast'.
i'm sorry, i must sound so annoying, but it has to be said.

& i never liked doc martens before, but now that they've been around, i like them.
urgh, trendwhore.

This is a true classic, and even if you don't care a hoot about classics, it is a seriously good boot. The air-sole puts a little bounce in your step; it gives good ankle support; it feels all-round good, and it looks pretty neat, too.
