Ain't Had No Fun

Today I'm testing out the romantic semi-gothic Lula Magazine sort of look. I have to say, for the most part I'm a total comfort bum* so its nice to just 'dress up' one in a while.

Yesterday I made a 'found object art' sort of necklace. The zipper pull and the buckle are two items that I literally picked up off the ground and added to the necklace. I like how random the necklace is, but it still has a story.

*Wen I say bum, I mean it. On the days I don't do outfit posts, I'm generally lazing around unabashedly in sweats.

P.S. -This is killer random, but I must tell everyone that in the cafeteria a few days ago I saw a girl slather her hot dog in ranch dressing and egg salad. Does anyone else out there do this? Because I was really weirded out and want to know if that is a taste sensation that anyone else has tried.

Angela Chase

So I was kind of wasting time yesterday when I realized that there was a lot of 90s tv shows that I was interested in watching but never had, like Twin Peaks, Clarissa Explains It All and My So-Called Life. I managed to find the first two episodes of My So-Called Life in full on youtube (I just finished watching episodes 3 and four in parts) and I have to say that I've developed a minor obsession. Clair Danes as Angela Chase is fantastically relatable not to mention her wardrobe of plaid dresses and oversize shirts is pretty much wonderful. Not to mention Jared Leto as the titular love interest? Be still my beating heart. It's practically a crime that it only ran for one season.

Oh, and you know what else is great about the 90s? Kate Moss's first magazine cover when she was 16! How positively adorable could she get?

Instant karma's gonna get you.

I've been obsessed with bleached-out jeans ever since I saw Ali Michael wearing a pair of Habituals in Teen Vogue ages ago. Now I'm excited to experiment with my own DIY pair! Even though I think they could be dressed up quite nicely with perhaps some sequins, I decided to go the casual route with an old sweatshirt and a scarf I knit was I was 10. Don't ask me what Dragon Squadron is supposed to be, I just like the sweater.

Whenever I get bored, I draw stuff that doesn't make sense. Case in point: jaws!

I have no idea why I just posted that picture. I also have no idea why I get so much sick gratification out of watching clips of the Maury Show on youtube. There's no way those stories are real. "Sex for a double cheeseburger?"

I am occasionally capable of excellence.

Today is a leopard/ruffles kind of day. Yes its a little ridiculous, but who doesn't enjoy being a little ridiculous once in a while? Plus, I'm having a mini-ruffle shirt rivalry with one of my friends and am hoping this Seinfeld-esquw 'puffy shirt' number will give me a one up. Not to mention, I buttoned up my cardigan wrong (oops!) but it ended up looking a little bit Comme des Garcon/H&M. At least in my delusional mind.

P.S. -Guess who did a little bleach DIY? Can't wait to wear these babies out.

P.P.S. -Don't expect to se one of those "omfg-shredded-tee" shirts on here any time soon. I really can't comprehend the appeal of that DIY.

So basically...

...Lookbook.nu is the greatest thing that ever happened to me. I love how you can keep scrolling down forever and the pictures never stop being fabulous.

In other news, I want to buy everything on Maki Maki Vintage's eBay store. She might be the most exciting stylist ever. Just look how she is rocking those latex leggings!

Sorry for the lengthy post interlude. I went home and dial-up internet was too depressing for me to even try and use. Which is funny since I've written the blog on dial-up internet from its inception to early September. I've become so used to high-speed I can hardly bear to use dial up any more.

Aristotle vs. Darwin: Its on!

You know when people say 'feel the burn'? I feel like that really applies to me, and not just because I'm wearing latex leggings. More or less because exams are in 3 weeks! I probably shouldn't be stressed yet, but I am. Please excuse me while I hole myself up in the library.

P.S. I had this terrible dream, it was that my train home left at 4:45 am. Childhood nightmares tend to involve scary monsters and super creeps. University nightmares involve missing sleep...

P.P.S. Video blog!

Come on little gamma ray

So, this was the outfit that I wore on Saturday and tried to get a picture of but couldn't. Yes, I'm lame and put it on again for photo-taking purposes. But really, you can't own Batman. Today's look, featured below is what I affectionately call "lazy bum". Knit sweater, sweatpants and moccasins. You heard it here first. Word.

I was lucky enough to go to Value Village on the weekend (first time thrift shopping in over a month!) and I found this 1980s high-waisted skirt and granny-victorian ankle boots.

There was a pretty decent selection of designer stuff there; a Burberry wool skirt and Saks Fifth Avenue blazer. But both were pretty 'matronly' looking, so I obviously didn't buy either. There was a really pretty necklace and belt that I'm regretting not buying, but I really couldn't afford them.

Oh, and more news. I am completely obsessed with this video for Beck's "Gamma Ray" starring Chloe Sevigny. It's a trip, if you know what I mean. Discotheque Confusion posted it first and I seriously cannot stop watching it.

Quick Update for Stylish Wanderers

I went to take a picture of my outfit yesterday and...damn! My camera was out of batteries! So I went to buy batteries and they ended up being defective. So I haven't got any recent outfit pictures, but I do have fresh batteries so my world is okay.

So this is something I wore last week and neglected to post...

...and this is me in full winter gear outside of my favourite tree on campus. Yes, I am one of those unfortunate souls who wears black all winter.

...and I want to add costume jewelry to a knit scarf now. Inspiration!

London Bridge

It's been so gloomy lately, that I can actually make believe I'm in London. I am lamenting the severe lack of Topshop around, though... The huge boots I'm wearing are actually equestrian boots but since they're rubber they make a damn good pair of rain boots. Or should I say gumboots or wellies, if I'm pretending to be British?

In non-British news, I am completely obsessed with this Teen Vogue editorial. I am always drawn to glamourous grunge sorts of images, even if it never really comes through in my own outfits. Long live sequins and boots and bunny masks.

EDIT -Dude, I'm not IN London, the crappy weather just makes me feel like I am.

Lake of Fire

I shall fondly refer to todays outfit as the "batshit-crazy" look. Stange animal sitting atop my head? Check. Gratuitously un-fashion tie-dye? Check. Garish 1980s cardigan? Check. Loving that sequin detail!

In my defense, I wore the hat and the winter boots because the sky was emitting this poor excuse for snow that just ended up being really wet once it hit the ground. What do meteorologists call that? Oh yeah, they call it dumb.

Monday Afternoon Inspiration

I found this photograph on Amelia's lovely blog and just had to repost it! Red hair is so beautiful.

Every inspiration post I do seems to involve a grunge icon. Let's give Kurt Cobain a break today and shine the spotlight on Mark Arm of Mudhoney. So dreamy!

Oh Elinkan, you are amazing and I want those American Apparel tights more than anything right now!

Face Hunter always figures heavily into my insporations. Even though a guy is wearing this, I would kill for his jacket/pants/especially the SHOES!

She is just too cute...

Savoy Truffle

If you own a MacBook, and want to experience an otherworldly dimension of happiness, then I implore you to download MacSaber. Having lightsaber fights with your laptop is more fun than you would suspect.

I wore this all yesterday for Friday night escapades.

On the way to a bus stop, I was approached by a strange man who asked "IS THAT AN OWL?" When I hastily replied "yes", he got even more excited and asked "CAN I HAVE IT???" Then I said no and laughed awkwardly and walked a little faster to get to the bus stop...

Also, I find it kind of hilarious that lots of people are obsessed by Kate Lanphear's pyramid-studded wristwear. Ummmm, have you never been inside a Claire's Accessories before? I have this studded wristband left over from my ninth-grade poser punk days and decided to wear it as a nostalgic piss take. Eat my dust, KL...

Victory is Everyone's

I am so happy about the Obama sweep that I nearly shed a tear this morning. It's a little ridiculous and frustrating how people (myself included) get so involved in American politics that they choose to ignore their own. Canada's election one month ago had pretty much the lowest voter turnout ever. Booo.

I wore this two days ago. There is a lot going on, but it's simple enough to work.

Yesterday was all about the glamour! it was the first time I'd worn my latex legging out proper and they were pretty much a unanimous hit amongst the peers.

In more random news - I forgot Cory Kennedy existed. Now I remember. She really hasn't come up with anything in a while, has she? Well, I don't read Nylon so I guess I wouldn't know, but... Would you just look at Mark Hunter? Rainbow vomit!

Gobama.

Hey, look everyone! Today is inspiring pictures Tuesday!

Mouse graves of wardrobe_remix oozes vintage glamour. I love her glasses!

This one's for Tavi and I...

Julia Dunstall has the best model style everrrrr.

I want to try this...

Hel-looks is consistently amazing. This outfit just slays me.

Statesiders, I officially endorse Obama. Pleasepleaseplease make the world happy and vote for him. I bet Kevin Barnes endorses Obama too. (Yes, I finally got pictures from the concert! Thanks, babe.)

fashion forestry: new favourite blog

There are so many damn fashion blogs out there, and many (but thank God not all!) of them seem to follow the same aesthetic. Really, I don't know how many more studded boot/ripped jean/Kate Lanphear-worshipping combinations I can handle. I'm not going to go on a long harp about originality, because I doubt there's a shred of it in me - I just think its so refreshing to see someone wearing exactly what they want for none other than that reason.

The person I am talking about is Nicole, from fashion forestry. I read about her on Susie Bubble's blog, and was shocked to see on one of the posts written on her there were quite a few negative comments. I instead would like to celebrate the cult of weird and wonderful.

Nicole wears the craziest vintage things, but always pulls them off and looks amazing! I wish there were more people like her blogging - what she wears on a regular basis is inspiration galore.
