Thundering blissfully towards death.

Today is my first official day of 'twenty-somethinghood'. Yep, it's my twenty-first birthday! Or should I say, 'barfday'? I'm officially breaking out the 'adult' today with braided bangs, heirloom jewelery and little black dress. Or should I say, the sad little gothic girl inside is mourning the death of my youth? However you take it, these are the classiest goth jam vibes on the market.

A very merry Grinch-mas to you all! Instead of blogging, I've been spending my time wisely: outdoor ice skating, reading Kurt Vonnegut books, cooking and EATING MY WEIGHT IN CHOCOLATE THRICE OVER. My wonderful mother custom made me this perfect Peter Pan collar dress and I've been parading around in it for hours. For one day a year, goth jams become Grinch jams!!

Handel's Messiah is playing on the radio and I can't wait to hear the Queen's annual Christmas speech. Good day to you all!

The Not Quite Twelve Sweaters of Christmas

So I really wanted to do a post called 'The Twelve Sweaters of Christmas', but then realized as extensive as my sweater wardrobe is, I really didn't have enough 'appropriately festive' garments to cover the category. Also, half of my wardrobe is in a different city so in the spirit of the holidaze I present to you; my top three ultimate Christmas sweaters of 2010!

Drowning in Excess

It is rather shocking to behold that in all my years of blogging, I have never even posted a picture of my BEST FRIEND! We haven't seen each other in almost a year, what with Ms. Shelby Seu being an art star and all. But now that we're finally home together we decided to have a traditional English afternoon tea!

We dressed up all fancy and ate fresh scones with clotted cream and jam, macarons, finger sandwiches, Earl Grey tea and all things that are delicious.

Marie Antoinette's got nothing on this tag team.

Aaaaand I'm off to Ottawa for the weekend! Going to see extended family, visit the Museum of Natural History, watch Arrested Development, be a general hell-raiser etc. The minimal wardrobe I packed is very Goth Jams: Sparkle Edition. I'm really in love with my American Apparel sweater dress, vintage leopard collar and thrifted Doc Martens.

Grand Academy

So I’ve only been home for the holidays for one day now and already, the thrifting in small-town Canada is UNREAL! Apparently the huge new Salvation Army just opened recently, and I managed to find some classy black ankle boots with gold eyelets and a chunky heel.

AND chunky heel Doc Martens! I didn’t think it was possible for Docs to get any more 1990s than they already are, but the chunky heel just brings them to a whole new level of retro. So awesome. I will take it upon myself to ensure that 2011 is the year that 1990s boots will be resurrected from the grave.

Anyways, today’s outfit consists of; American Apparel camel cardigan, thrifted blue-striped button down, American Apparel riding pants, thrifted Italian leather combat boots. I bought new plain black laces for them today, so clearly I need to start wearing these more often!!

In other news, this is my 1, 111th post!

What's this? Oh could it be? My first ever feature in a print magazine?!
Why yes it is. When Worn Fashion Journal contacted me this summer asking me to participate in a 'Fashion Scavenger Hunt', duh, I said yes. They wanted me to put together an outfit that incorporated a red pattern, something yellow, a hand-me-down from a relative, fruits and the shoes I wore last Saturday. Want to play some 'eye-spy' with the outfit pic?

This painting never dries.

The snows looks like its finally here to stay for winter, and my only true protection against the elements it the ability to dress up. I have abandoned my former dreams of 'Arctic Princess' and replaced them with the more sophisticated 'Arctic Disco Queen'. The sweater and Cougar boots are super cozy, but I'm ready to jive with the penguins and polar bears in my navy disco pants. This winter is going to be the best.

Man Brain

A little while ago, I bought the BEST DRESS EVER from Cheapskate Chic's blog shop. It's probably the most intensely awesome granny piece I own, and people sometimes stop me to ask if I'm wearing a "graduation collar." Here is another picture of me wearing this dress. Class of 2012, yeah!

Also, sometimes I get cool things that I didn't pay for in the mail and it's always a wonderful surprise.
First up is this rad Dainty Librarian sweatshirt. In case you didn't catch that, they are cats. Shooting lazers out of their EYES.

Also, a copy of Tumbleweed Zine. It's adorable and the poetry is so good!

Wow, this stress is getting to me.

Easy Way Out

This outfit is what I would refer to as 'exam study chic'. You know, an outfit that actually looks half decent while cramming your brain with superior knowledge and drinking half your weight in coffee. The sweater is American Apparel vintage - it's damn cozy and I've been feeling the cable knit vibe lately. The loose black dress pants are comfy but better looking than sweatpants and the Doc Martens are simply necessary for snow protection. Happy almost-holidays to everyone, I can't wait until this interim period of hell is over! By the time the afterlife comes along, I will be well prepared...

My thoughts on 12.05.10

Fuck Celine and minimalism, I just want to dress like Nicki Minaj all day every day.

Never lie.

Do you ever forget about something you bought online, then a package comes in the mail and you're like WHOAH!? I can't believe I forgot I ordered this lace Victorian top off Etsy, the puff sleeves make me feel like Anne Shirley, and I should be drinking raspberry cordial and having my braids pulled by pesky boys. I tried to go for a weird 1880s meets 1980s look with the leather skirt that was thrifted literally years ago, but I always thought was too awkward of a length for me. Calling it now: 2011 is the year of awkward-length skirts.
Also, Stephen Lea Sheppard (aka Harris of Freaks and Geeks fame) tweeted at me. My life will never be the same.

Tell Me I Need Somebody

Thanks to youtube video tutorials, I have discovered that my new favourite hairstyle is: MILKMAID BRAIDS. After I saw them on Tavi, I had to try them and figured my hair was finally long enough. Excellent. My feelings on life, pictured below.
Anyways, I know this is a bit late but I've spent some time reflecting on the Black Friday weekend and just what it means to people etc. In commemoration of the human element of Black Friday, I wrote an article called 'On Buy Nothing Day' that you probably want to read. Earlier this year, I did a book review of Obsessive Consumption by Kate Bingaman-Burt that is also of pertinent interest.
