It is basically too hot to move, think or do anything requiring even the most basic intellectual capacity. Needless to say, I've spent most of my free time shamelessly indulging in the guiltiest of pleasures: the 1990s teen movie. The 'teen movie' is an art in itself, requiring the perfect combination of "weirdo alterna-girl main character," "awkward prom scene" and "unlikely love interest." The year 1999 was a high point in the canon of teen movies, and I've documented some of my favourites with screenshots for your viewing pleasure.
Jawbreaker is probably the most disturbing film of the bunch. It stars Rose McGowan as a hot yet remorseless teenage murderer and features a freaky sex cameo from Marilyn Manson! Almost like an unfunny, brutalistic Mean Girls?
Completely obsessed with nerd girl Fern Mayo, who is totally played by the same actress as Kitty from Arrested Development!Does Marilyn Manson have a better cameo in Jawbreaker or Party Monster? The jury is still out!
Best prom scene ever.
Never Been Kissed, starring 90s hero Drew Barrymore as a journalist who goes back to high school to infiltrate the popular crowd and falls in love with a hot teacher along the way.
Leelee Sobieski is the cute math nerd with awesome barrettes, floral shirts and glasses.
Costume-themed prom!!
Look at these two adorable ones!!
She's All That is the quintessential 'teen' movie, which really means that it got its guts ripped out by Not Another Teen Movie. Rachel Leigh Cook's Lainey Boggs is totally the vanilla high school version of Winona Ryder in Reality Bites. She plays an adorable arty girl who is ignored in school until the "popular guy" hinges a bet on turning her into the prom queen.
Performance art.
Clunky heels + no glasses = the seminal "transformation."
10 Things I Hate About You is apparently based on Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew, with Julia Stiles playing an antisocial teen feminist named Kat (aka me in high school). If you don't watch it for Kat's sassy quips, watch it because Heath Ledger is really, really sexy.
Teenage Bedroom porn.
Tie-dye riot grrrl.
Dude, I NEED her shirt.
Paintball makeouts.

paintball make out is priceless
These were the movies of my young teenage years. Loved Never Been Kissed and 10 Things I hate about You is my favorite Teen movie. She's all that didn't even to impress me at all at 13.
And then there is Jawbreaker. I sat there going WTF!? the whole time (in a slightly horrified but slightly awesome way). I need to watch that as an adult to see what I think now.
All of my favorites in one post!! :D
This post totally makes me want to have a teen movie marathon now!
yeah i was pretty much in love with all of those movies in high school, primarily b/c i associated with all o those girls. except rose mcgowan's character. however, i loved jawbreakers so i decided to rent it.
what a weird night that was.
ps does anyone remember blockbuster?
What a lucky generation we were. I remember 10 Things I Hate about U and She's All That giving this lonely weirdo teen hope when it came to love. Someone would pay some guy to fall in love with me, and then when I found out and got mad the guy would realize he was in love with me and we would buy a pizza with the money he'd made.
These movies are like my saving grace sometimes. My favorite movie ever is 10 things i hate about you! I love Heath ledger because he is a walking sex monsters in that movie. Kat just makes me laugh and her sassy oneliners are genuis.
dude, lady pal, blockbuster is amazing. i really really miss them. there is just something so wonderful about physically perusing movie titles and remembering great movies such as party monster (as you mentioned) or discovering some little seen barely released gem that onlty blockbuster bought that has winona ryder and maybe debbie harry and probably that dude from friends in it- i know that exists somewhere, i just know it does.
perfection.
some of the best movies I've ever seen (except for 'she's all that'). Oh Freddie Prince Jr. hahahaha.

I really want to watch 10 things now! I don't think I've seen that since I was a teen. Jawbreaker sounds interesting but I've never even heard of it before. I'm going to have to check it out.
Love these movies. Definitely re-watching them all over the weekend! Thanks for reminding me. :)
Never Been Kissed could have been my life- not even joking. Thank goodness I got to university and got a boyfriend.
Antisocial teen feminist- this made me laugh. Isabel you are quite quite awesome.
I am also pleased to have a few new ones to watch- although Clueless is possibly the ultimate 90s teen movie for me, but I think possibly purely due to repition and not enough exploration of the genre.
Also, oh my, paintball make out is so damn sexy. And the Andy Williams band sing along.
Ooh yes, and I also really enjoy CJ from the West Wing say 'quivering member'.
ah, 10 Things I Hate About You is such a classic! and I've got some extra love for it based on it's total Seattle-ness. There's actually a ton of Shakespeare allusions in the movie, like the name of their high school, and uh...other stuff. The paintball scene takes place at Gasworks park, which is right down the street from where my friend lived this past year. And the scene where the younger sister and Joseph Gordon-Levitt are talking by the troll always surprised me because I've never walked by the troll when there weren't a ton of tourists taking pictures. Except at like 3am and then there's just drunks trying to climb it.
definitely took some style tips from Kat in 10 Things, though th fact that Save Ferris were featured killed her riotgrrl cred for me back then, ha.
i remember hhhattting jawbreaker when I was younger because there was so much swearing, lol. I should probably give it a second chance
There ia another teen movie from 1999: The Rage, Carrie 2.
It's... something.

ugh so important. can't hardly wait, don't forget about can't hardly wait!
The best part is Julia Stiles dancing on the table - amazing!
Great collection of movies in 99... I remember them all fondly, I loved 10 Things I Hate About You... Loved JS...
Woah, I must've been around 7 or 8 when I saw Jawbreaker with my sister but oh man I still remember being SO SCARED of that scene in the trunk of the car! And yet I probably watched it three or four times, haha
but sooner or later... it has to drop.
many greats covered, bravo!
Never Been Kissed always seems to get left out- it belongs! I love Aldys =)
I've been intrigued by Jawbreaker for a long time but it does sound disturbing.
great collection.
I've never seen jawbreaker but now feel I must.
