Mother Nature's Son

This entire outfit was thrifted in the magnificent secondhand stores of Belleville, Ont. for a mere $13. People way underestimate the quality of thrifted goods in crappy, small towns - it's always better than you think! I like how the skirt actually looks like it was made out of a curtain. The weird length and uneven hem on this thing is golden!!!

I also thrifted an amazing new pair of witch boots for Fall, which is great since my last pair pinched my toes a little too enthusiastically. The grand total? $2.50.

Do you guys remember that silly little video of me awkwardly describing my life's ambition to create a fashion magazine that encourages free thinking rather than conspicuous consumption? A magazine that treats women intelligent women with love and respect while challenging the conventions of the "fashion" industry?
It appears I am a finalist in the contest so if you think that might be a magazine you would be interested in reading, please click here to vote for me!! The voting period lasts until September 16th and you can vote once every day, so please exercise your democratic capabilities and vote for me (or whoever you think has the best idea). I love you all!

Voted! I always pass Belleville on my way to T/O never thought about thrifting there. You raise a good point small town thrift stores having a lot of gems AND they generally don't have ridiculous prices.

Lovin' the blouse and that skirt. Small town thrift shopping always lead to the best scores. AND I voted for you, girl. Best of luck!

I grew up in Belleville.. (Patrick is my brother).. But when I lived there i shopped at the Quinte Mall more than thrift stores.. But now I work in Strathroy and it's true, small towns are awesome for finding amazing things in thrift stores, and usually a lot cheaper.

Awesome boots! I'm totally jealous that you can find witchy footwear for so cheap! I'm still searching for a pair. T.T

Good luck with the contest! I'll be voting every day. :)

Wow, well done, congratulations, if you won that would be incredible. It has also been my dream for a very long time to work for a fashion magazine and I also think a magazine like the one you described needs to exist. In fact, if I get into honours next year I was seriously considering creating my own magazine. Hey, if you win, and you need a graphic designer (I'm a 3rd year design student) I will happily volunteer my services haha. Before I finish, nice outfit... the skirt is great.

Awww yes, my outfit total is almost always about 15 euros. Thrifting is hip here, but designer clothes with a thrifty feel hipper so everything is still to be found pretty cheap. It feels so fulfilling :D

I love this look. It kinda reminds me of the Big Love mormon fashion, but def. in a good way (obviously).

I hope your magazine project gets funded, you got my vote!

I think thrifting is way better in small towns because everything is less picked over by urban hipsters. Or at least, that is what I have found. Those boots are great! What a find.

Your future magazine also sounds like a delight. Good luck as a finalist, and I'll vote for you!

YOUR SKIRT. YOUR BOOTS. I have good thrifting skillz!?--this compliment can be boomerang-ed back to YOU!

Also. YES. Small towns have the most neat-o thrift finds.

p.s. Not voting for you should fall under the category of 'criminal activity'.

I used to read your blog a couple of years ago, but just happened upon again today. I seriously hope you win this prize because the magazine you describe wanting to produce is one that I've been wanting for awhile - but I couldn't quite put my finger on it like you have. best of luck!
